Writer Designer Website

What I learned from being the client

I asked my writer friend and colleague Ben Jones to create a website for Mary Avery, writer to showcase how my writing pairs with graphics and design. In every example on the site, the words and images are mutually dependent—and work hard to make each other better and tell a complete story. This site demonstrates my facility with both words and images, and shows I have the expertise to know when and how much to rely on both to tell a story. I understand the challenges of being on the client side, and how rewarding a strong partnership between creative and client can be. I’ll be a great partner 🙂

Problem

Work with a writer to develop and build a website for Mary Avery, writer. The site needs to demonstrate the benefits of hiring a designer (me) who can write (also me), and for this, I put this project in the capable hands of Ben Jones who managed to get his client (again, me) to review, revise and approve the site.

Creative Strategy

  • Make a case for hiring Mary Avery, a designer who is also a writer.
  • Build a website to showcase her work.
  • Lean on the visual appeal of the design work, while giving the writing a balanced presence on the page.

Visual Communication

  • Through carefully chosen samples, showcase work that equally emphasizes my design and writing skills
  • Design a site that is clean, intuitive, and user-friendly, where the only surprises are the good kind.
